Local influencer campaigns in Australia

Plan a local Australian creator campaign around the service area, credible content, audience evidence and an offer customers can use.

Local influencer campaigns begin with the area the business can serve. Define the offer and the customer action in that area, then look for creators who can explain it credibly to a plausible local audience. A creator's address does not establish where their viewers live.

Set the geographic boundary

List the stores, suburbs, towns or delivery areas covered by the offer. State any exclusions clearly: an in-store collection offer is of little use to someone who cannot reach that store. Give creators the current address, trading hours, offer conditions and booking or ordering route. Recheck changing details before publication.

Choose one main job for the content, such as introducing a location, showing a service or inviting a visit. That decision determines what the creator needs to experience and what evidence will matter afterwards.

Check market fit across the offer

Australia should not be treated as one uniform market. 10am Digital notes that states and territories vary, and advises businesses to understand where their customers live and what they care about. Check that the campaign's language, examples and offer details suit the locations it can actually serve, rather than assuming one national message will fit every area.

Book for content and audience fit

Review a creator's ordinary and sponsored work. Can they show the place or service from genuine experience and answer a question local customers have? Request recent results for comparable content, keeping the format, metric and dates visible. Ask what audience geography is available and whether it describes followers, viewers, views or watch time.

Platform data has limits. TikTok One's creator search lists creator country or region separately from audience country or region; those filters do not establish city-level viewers. YouTube may withhold geography rows when data is limited. If a campaign depends on one city, an Australia-wide figure leaves a material gap. Record it rather than treating follower location as a forecast of post reach.

For each candidate, record the proposed local angle, comparable work, geographic evidence and its limits, deliverables and fee. If booking several creators, give each a reason to be in the mix. Adding their separate reach figures will not give a count of distinct local people.

TikTok One offers additional screening signals: median video views and engagement rate, with sorting options such as engagement rate and most recent posts. Creator profiles also show performance trends over time, audience insights and recent organic and sponsored videos. Use these to assess consistency and whether the content suits the campaign; they do not replace evidence that viewers live within the offer area.

When YouTube Analytics omits geography rows, first check whether the selected period or geography breakdown is limiting the report. YouTube suggests extending the period to more than 30 days or removing filters and breakdowns, which may make more data available. Thresholds are not published and can change, so missing rows should remain an uncertainty in the campaign plan, not be read as proof of no local audience.

Prepare the customer experience

For a physical visit, arrange access, a contact at the venue and a time when the creator can experience what the post will describe. Agree on the assets, publishing window and person who can hold a post if the offer changes.

Australian Consumer Law applies to paid and incentivised social media posts. Product, price and delivery claims must not be false or misleading. Make the promotional relationship easy to notice in the finished placement, and review the video, on-screen text, caption and destination together.

The ACCC has flagged vague terms such as 'sp' and 'spon', and disclosures formatted so they were difficult to notice. A disclosure does not correct an inaccurate claim.

Treat publication approval as a release gate, not just a final caption check. Confirm that the offer is still available in the stated locations, the price and conditions match the destination, and the audience can follow the stated booking or ordering route. If any detail changes, pause the affected placement until its wording and destination have been checked together.

The ACCC's sweep reviewed 118 influencers across seven sectors; 81 per cent had posts that raised concerns under the Australian Consumer Law for potentially misleading advertising. The most common issue was missing disclosure where payment, gifts or other incentives appeared to be involved.

Keep support for claims available before publication. The ACCC says it can require businesses to back up social media claims, and may investigate and take compliance or enforcement action over false or misleading advertising. Check that each factual product, price or delivery statement can be supported, and remove or correct claims that cannot be substantiated.

Review the local result

Record what went live, when, and what each placement reported, including any available geography. Compare the result with the content's original job. A tagged link, booking code or customer-stated source can provide a signal, but none captures every person who saw a post and later visited.

Report observed visits, enquiries or orders alongside other local activity during the campaign. State what the evidence shows and where local reach or contribution to sales remains uncertain.
