Part of Working with B2B influencers and industry experts
Choosing between an expert webinar and a sponsored post
Compare an expert webinar with a sponsored post by buyer question, production work, audience action and measurement limits.
Choose an expert webinar when the buyer's question needs a worked explanation and live questions the team can support. Choose a sponsored post when a useful point can stand alone in a shorter piece.
Compare the work and audience action each format requires before booking. Neither is inherently better for every B2B brief.
Match the format to the question
Ask the expert to outline the answer. If it depends on several conditions, a webinar can give room for a demonstration and discussion of trade-offs. If it is one practical distinction or a prompt to examine a fuller resource, a post may serve better.
A technical product does not automatically need a webinar. A short post can be valuable if it states a real limitation clearly and offers an appropriate next step.
| Decision | Expert webinar | Sponsored post |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable question | Needs a walkthrough or moderated questions | Can be answered accurately in a self-contained piece |
| Preparation | Expert access, demonstration checks, moderation and event planning | Defined angle, checked facts and placement review |
| Audience action | Register, attend, ask a question or request follow-up | Read or watch, respond or use an available link |
| Evidence to review | Registration, attendance, questions and later enquiries as separate measures | Placement results, responses, tagged visits where available and later enquiries |
| Main constraint | Attendance takes time; a recording needs its own plan | Limited space may omit important conditions |
These are planning characteristics. They are not performance findings.
Compare the work being bought
For a webinar, specify preparation, product access, any rehearsal, moderation, registration page, delivery, recording edits and proposed clips. For a sponsored post, specify the asset, publishing account, review round, posting window and any separate brand use.
Request quotes against those scopes. A post fee and an event fee may include different work.
A webinar may invite questions the expert cannot answer live, so arrange a route for checking them afterwards. A short post needs enough context to avoid an overbroad claim.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it can require businesses to back up claims and may investigate misleading or false claims.
Plan the next step and data use
A webinar registration enables participation; it is not automatically a qualified sales enquiry. Explain the registration purpose and any planned sharing of attendee details.
Check applicable privacy obligations before using those details for another purpose. If a follow-up email or SMS promotes a product or service, check the applicable Australian commercial-message rules.
A tagged post link can identify visits through that route when implemented correctly. It cannot reveal everyone who read the post or later contacted the business another way.
Define a useful response for the chosen format before publication. Treat observed responses as evidence of interest rather than proof that the format caused a sale.
Compliance & Measurement Considerations
- Webinar registration
- Not automatically a qualified lead; requires clear purpose communication.
- Follow-up messaging
- SMS/email promotions must comply with Australian commercial message rules.
- Post tracking
- Tagged links can track visits but not all readers or indirect contacts.
- Claim support
- ACCC may require evidence for any promotional claim.
Make the booking decision
Commission the webinar if the expert needs time to work through the question and the team can deliver a reliable event. Commission the post if the expert has a concise, supportable point and the next step is ready.
If both are useful, give them different jobs. Make the commercial relationship clear in each finished placement and review each piece against its assigned job.
