Creator Sourcing

Checking influencer audience quality

Assess a creator’s audience fit using comparable post results, location evidence and relevant conversation, while keeping reporting limits visible.

Check whether a creator reaches people your offer can serve, whether comparable content has attracted useful attention, and whether the evidence is strong enough for this booking. Follower count alone cannot answer those questions. Record what is known, what is missing and how each gap affects the brief.

Define the audience this campaign needs

Record the offer’s service area, the customer question and the proposed content format before comparing creators. An Australia-wide online offer and a Brisbane-only service need different location evidence. A creator’s address does not establish where their viewers are.

Compare three kinds of evidence

QuestionEvidence to inspectLimit
Where is the audience?Available geography with its platform, metric and period. An account-level report cannot predict the audience of a future post.
What has reached people recently? Results from several posts comparable to the proposed format.Past results are not guaranteed future reach.
Is the conversation relevant?Questions and creator replies on ordinary and sponsored posts.Commenters do not represent everyone who watched.

YouTube notes that some data, including geography, may be limited. Its Audience tab gives an overview of who is watching and insights on their demographics. TikTok One’s advertiser search separates creator country or region from audience country or region. Neither platform example guarantees that every creator can supply the breakdown you want.

YouTube’s monthly audience is an estimate of unique viewers who watched in the previous 28 days, intended as an estimate of active audience size. It is calculated daily on a rolling 28-day basis, so the figure is not a fixed monthly total. Keep that period and definition attached when comparing it with subscriber counts or results from individual posts.

YouTube groups monthly audience members as new, casual or regular viewers based on watch behaviour. Its age report shows which age ranges add most to watch time; its gender report shows audience distribution. These details can help assess whether the available profile resembles the campaign’s intended audience, but they do not establish that those viewers need or will buy the offer.

TikTok One search includes performance measures such as median video views and engagement rate, plus audience details such as country or region and age group. Keep the metric name and audience dimension with each figure. A creator’s follower count, median video views and audience breakdown describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

Match evidence to the campaign outcome

Separate evidence of broad reach from evidence that viewers act. TikTok for Business describes advertiser goals as reach, reliability and business results; for reach, it identifies organic views, engagement rate and completion rate as performance signals. For a conversion-focused brief, clicks, purchases or sign-ups provide evidence of audience action, rather than reach alone.

Use the available measures that correspond to the proposed job, and keep their limits visible. Compare results with comparable posts and the campaign’s stated outcome. A strong result on one measure does not establish strength on another, and none of these measures, by itself, confirms that the audience is in the service area.

Audience interest can add context to relevance, but it is not proof of purchase intent. YouTube’s Audience reports show other channels viewers consistently watched over the past 28 days, and other videos, Shorts, live streams and podcasts they watched over the past seven days. These reports can inform whether viewers’ interests sit near the campaign topic.

Investigate patterns without making accusations

Inspect several recent posts, noting their topic, date, format and result. A follower jump may follow a widely shared post, collaboration or promotion. Ask what happened and whether later content relevant to your brief still reached people. A jump alone does not establish bought followers.

Comments can reveal useful questions and how a creator handles them. Repeated generic replies may warrant a wider sample or a question to the creator, but text alone cannot establish who wrote them or whether engagement was manipulated. YouTube and TikTok prohibit artificial engagement; those policies do not make an outside observer’s chart or comment sample a finding against an account.

Make the booking decision

For each candidate, record the proposed content job, comparable posts, reported results, geography and its metric, relevant audience questions, unexplained changes and missing evidence. Label differences between follower, viewer and watch-time reports rather than ranking their percentages directly.

Proceed when the available evidence fits the offer. Request more evidence when a material report lacks its label, period or context. Change the brief if the creator can make useful content but the intended audience or format is a poor fit.

Hold a location-dependent booking if the needed location evidence remains unavailable. Keep that uncertainty in the decision record rather than turning an assumption into a campaign finding.

A difference between displayed subscriber totals and analytics is not, on its own, evidence of a problem. YouTube says its Analytics subscriber number may be approximately 48 hours behind the number displayed on the channel, allowing extra verification and spam reviews. Record which report supplied a figure and when it was viewed, so timing does not become an unexplained discrepancy.

Treat limited or absent platform data as uncertainty, not as a negative finding about the creator. YouTube notes that some data, including geography, may be limited, and the monthly audience calculation continues to look back 28 days from the most recent day in the selected date range. If a report cannot answer a material campaign question, assess whether the remaining evidence is enough for this booking.

How to Make a Booking Decision Based on Audience Quality

  1. Step 1Record the proposed content job, comparable posts, reported results, geography and its metric.
  2. Step 2Label differences between follower, viewer and watch-time reports instead of ranking percentages directly.
  3. Step 3Proceed when available evidence fits the offer; request more evidence if key data lacks label, period or context.
  4. Step 4Change the brief if the creator can make useful content but the intended audience or format is a poor fit.
  5. Step 5Hold a location-dependent booking if needed location evidence remains unavailable. Keep uncertainty visible in the record.

  2. Reading comment quality without guessing engagement fraudRead creator comments for relevant questions and useful replies while avoiding unsupported claims of engagement fraud.
  3. Checking whether an audience is actually in AustraliaCheck Australian audience location using the right follower, viewer or watch-time measure, with dates and reporting limits intact.
  4. Asking creators for useful audience evidenceUse a focused creator evidence request and check metric labels, dates, format, geography and reporting limits before booking.
